November is Lung Cancer Awareness month

Various studies have been conducted surrounding the link between lung cancer and other respiratory problems to cleaning chemicals in sprays.

The British Lung Foundation state ‘If you use irritating cleaning products, such as those based on bleach, particularly if you apply them with a spray, you may get respiratory irritation and symptoms if you have a long-term lung disease. Studies have found that if you use these products over a number of years it may cause asthma.’

Other findings include: – 19 Feb 2018 – ‘The new research indicates that people who use cleaning products in spray form on a regular basis risk causing long-term damage to their lungs. The extent of this depends on the chemicals in the sprays. Products containing irritating chemicals like ammonia are connected to the long-term decline in lung function’ – ‘Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer. Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile compounds (VOCs). Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach’ – 11 September 2017 – ‘Regular use of disinfectant cleaning products has been linked to an increased risk of developing fatal lung conditions’ (KinCheung/Reuters)’

Although there are various findings between the link between cleaning chemicals and lung cancer the NHS state that ‘It is difficult at this stage to advise on a particular action to take, other than to follow the manufacturers’ advice carefully, and to use these products in well-ventilated areas.’
